Parents Sue Department of Education for Violating State Law By Closing Schools Without Community Input

Public school parents, guardians and community leaders filed suit against the city Department of Education today for violating state education law by making zoning changes that affect neighborhood schools without approval from Community Education Councils, effectively denying parents and children access to neighborhood schools without a voice in the process.

David Grinage is a former police officer, detective, sergeant and owner of a private investigations business. Born in Brooklyn, he grew up in East New York and has lived in Bedford Stuyvesant for 22 years. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and earned degrees from New York Community College, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York Institute of Technology and the FBI National Academy. He teaches Martial Arts, President of the Community Education Council in District 23, President of his Block Association; Founder of the Coalition of Parents to Protect our Children; and a member of the National Organization of Black Law-Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), The New York Police Department Guardians Association, NAACP, The A. Phillip Randolph Institute (APRI) and an active member of the St. Stephens and St Martin’s Episcopal Church. He also served as Commissioner for Ruth Messenger’s Commission on African American Males. David Grinage has been married to his lovely wife Penny, for 28 years. They are the proud parents of two children, David and Nia.
